"Born in the Year of the Dragon"
Stamp Artist - Kathryn Hughett |
Supplies
- Rubber Stamps
- Art Neko; Chinese Zodiac Signs
Sheet Set - CPZS0000, Dragon;
- Sunday International purchased
through Art Neko: Kanji Half Sheet, Chinese Words Characters
& Phrases - OSSIKA21, Happy Birthday and Small Chinese Symbol
- 4 x 6 piece of medium weight
Watercolor paper
- Acrylic paint in several shades
of green, crimson and gold
- (I use Golden iridescent gold
acrylic paint. It mixes with other colors without turning green.)
- Sea sponge
- Large Watercolor brush
- Cosmetic sponge
- Sheet of 6 x 12 Crimson cardstock
- Glue stick
- Black ink for stamping fabric
or permanent ink
- 2 1/2 in. circular piece of
cardstock
- Gold embroidery floss
|
|
Directions:
Using a light green paint, brush
on a light wash of color over the entire surface of the watercolor
paper with a large watercolor brush. While the paper is still
slightly moist use a sea sponge and medium pressure to apply
a medium shade of green randomly over the sheet of paper. You
may use several shades and colors remembering to allow some of
the lighter washed background to show through. Using a deep shade
of green paint, lightly and sparingly sponge the entire piece
of paper. After the paper has dried completely, lightly sponge
gold highlights onto the paper. After the paint has dried completely,
tear one longer edge of the paper. Paint the torn edge with a
line of gold paint about 3/8 in. wide. Fold the sheet of 6x12
Crimson cardstock in half. Glue the painted paper to the right
side of the card with the torn edge facing the left side of the
card. Cut a 2 ¼ in wide circle from some scrap white cardstock.
Paint it with gold acrylic paint. Once the gold paint is dry,
paint the edge of the circle using a small cosmetic sponge with
crimson acrylic paint mixed with some gold paint. After the circle
is dry stamp the dragon image onto it with the fabric ink. (Regular
ink won't dry on the acrylic paint..) Stamp the Happy Birthday
characters onto the red side of the card.. Stamp the smaller
design in the lower left corner of the card. Make a tassel using
gold embroidery floss. Attach it to the back of the gold circle
and attach both to the green side of the card.
An option to making your green
paper is to buy some decorative handmade paper similar to what
I created.
(Hint: when painting the green paper, you might want to use a
larger piece of watercolor paper. Then you will have extra paper
in case you make a mistake tearing it and you will have some
for another project.)

"Domino Screen"
Stamp Artist - Sabra Brown Steinsiek |
Supplies
- Rubber Stamps
- Art Neko Water Lily and Dragonfly
Panel Stamp (ASMS0015)
- 4 prepared plastic dominoes
(shiny blank side bleached to remove glaze, then rinsed to remove
bleach)
- Black StayzOn Ink Pad
- Colored Pencils
- Glaze Pens (colored sharpies
may be substituted for glaze pens)
- Embossing powder or glitter
- Mat Fixative
- Gloss Fixative
- 3 small hinges
- E-6000 glue
|
|
Directions:
- Stamp each panel of stamp onto
separate domino (mask frames so they don't stamp)
- Let dry completely (I usually
wait overnight)
- FROM HERE, the following can
be done assembly line style doing each step on separate domino
before moving on to the next step.
- Color areas as desired with
colored pencils (Prismacolor Deluxe work best) - be sure all
pencil work is done before proceeding to next step!
Outline leaves and color flower stems with green glaze pen
LET DRY! Glaze pens will smear if not dry.
- Color flowers with two shades
of pink/red glaze pens (or any color) LET DRY
(NOTE: the glaze colors will dry raised giving a cloisonné
texture, sharpies will not give the raised effect.)
- Once all coloring is done, spray
dominoes with a coating of MAT FIXATIVE. DO NOT use gloss yet!
- After Mat fixative dries, spray
several layers of GLOSS fixative, letting each dry completely
in between.
- When last layer of gloss finish
is dry, fill in dragonfly wings with embossing ink, add embossing
powder and quickly emboss. This only takes a few seconds. More
will discolor the glaze. Glue and glitter can be used instead
of embossing ink/powder. A final coat of gloss may be applied
if desired.
- Finally, use E-6000 to attach
small hinges (from craft or hardware store) to back of dominoes
so that the hinge falls between the dominoes. The hinge should
be midway between the top and bottom of the domino backs.
- Once glue has thoroughly dried,
the screen can be displayed upright and curved either back or
forwards, perhaps in front of a small votive candle.
