Walnut Ink

Walnut Ink works as a "color wash" to stain paper and provides a vintage look to handmade cards or scrapbook pages. Available in both ready-made ink or dry crystals (that you mix with warm water to achieve varying shades), it is a simple medium to use for achieving that "aged" look that is so popular right now. It works well as a 'base' color with which you can then layer or blend other colors (iridescent watercolors, regular watercolors, dye reinkers, etc.) on top. I particularly like the look when doing "collage" style stamping. Once dry, you can stamp on it using either dye, permanent or pigment inks. And because it is a wet medium initially, you can achieve varying shades of color depending on the strength of the mix you use or add texture just by dabbing in places with a tissue or crumpled plastic wrap. I've found it most useful for backgrounds, however, you can also use it to paint in images just like any watercolor. I like having this product available for when I am looking for an "aged" look…it works better and faster than other products/techniques I've tried for achieving that look.

 Directions

  • Put walnut ink in spray bottle and spray on 5 ½ by 8 ½ in. sheet of watercolor paper to cover it. Mist with water and drizzle Calligraphy Colors inks over surface. Lift and turn paper so inks run together. When dry, mist again with Walnut ink on areas of paper and sprinkle Walnut Ink crystals sparingly on top. Add inks until desired colors are achieved and let dry.
  • Cut tag from Walnut ink background created and punch hole in top. Stamp hand, text and square swirl border randomly on tag with black stamp pad. Stamp two postoids on sticker paper with the black ink and paint with watercolors. Cut out images with postage decorative scissors. Peel off back of sticker paper and adhere to top of tag, overlapping images. Stamp splatter randomly over entire tag with the black stamp pad. Edge stamped tag with copper marker. Adhere to blue cardstock (cs) tag cut slightly larger than stamped tag. Punch top hole again. Thread fibers through hole.
  • Cut a panel out of the remainder of the Walnut ink background. Cut another slightly larger panel from the blue cs. Randomly stamp "swirl" with Brilliance inks onto Walnut ink panel. Punch corners on both Walnut ink panel and blue cs panel. Save punched corners. Adhere Walnut ink panel to blue panel with double-sided tape.
  • Stamp word, "Enchantment" and small swirl flower onto copper metal tag with black ink. Mix Liver of Sulfur in small container with a little water. Use a Q-tip to paint Sulfur mixture onto the tag. Let dry and polish with cloth. Punch small hole in end of tag and thread both ends with fibers.
  • Cut brown cs in half (5 ½ by 8 ½). Stamp swirl background onto brown cs with Brilliance Blue ink and edge with copper marker. Fold white linen cardstock in half to form card and adhere brown cs to top with double-sided tape.
  • Mount large panels with double-sided tape to front of card. Layer Walnut ink tag on top with foam tape.
  • Cut small rectangle out of blue cs and punch corners. Adhere to bottom of card. Attach copper metal tag on top with foam tape. Attach blue corner pieces (left over from punching) to each corner of card with foam tape.
