Shattered Glass Techniques

SHATTERED GLASS COLLAGE Technique by Carol Heppner
Published in the June 2002 issue of Stamping Arts & Crafts Magazine

BASIC TAPING INSTRUCTIONS:
Decide what size rectangle you will want your shattered collage. For this example, we will use a 5" x 7" opening.

Tear low-tack masking tape in half and place the jagged side of the masking tape along the edges of the 5" x 7" area. Use your finger to smooth the tape and make sure it is secure on the paper.

Tear additional strips of masking tape (the thinner the better) and randomly place them inside the 5" x 7" area. Make sure each piece of tape is secure on the paper.

Note: It is best not to try to figure out where you want the inside tape, but just place it randomly and quickly onto the paper. The key to taping is not to think!

WHITE CARDSTOCK TECHNIQUE:
Supplies:

Banana, pesto, berry purple, sepia, jet black archival inks from Ranger
Metallic gold, copper Lumiere paints from Jacquard
Low-tack masking tape
Polyester fiberfill (found in sewing departments)
White glossy card stock

Apply masking tape according to the "Basic Taping Instructions".

Run fiberfill over the banana ink pad to lad the fiberfill with ink. Apply banana ink randomly over the exposed areas of the white glossy cardstock. Using a clean piece of polyester fiberfill, apply sepia ink randomly over the exposed areas of the white glossy card stock, allowing some of the banana ink to show through. Apply pesto and berry purple inks in the same manner.

Using your fingers, randomly paint the metallic gold and copper Lumiere paints over the inks which you have placed on the glossy cardstock.

Randomly stamp your favorite rubber stamp images with jet black archival ink.

Carefully remove the masking tape.

BLACK CARDSTOCK TECHNIQUE:
Supplies:

Metallic gold, copper, green, red, white Lumiere from Jacquard
Archival double-stick tape
Low-tack masking tape
27 gauge wire, Natural
polyester fiberfill (found in sewing departments)
Various beads
White glossy cardstock
Jet black archival ink

Apply masking tape according to the "Basic Taping Instructions".

Using your fingers, randomly paint metallic gold, red, green, white and copper Lumiere paints over the exposed areas until the entire area has been covered.

Randomly stamp your favorite rubber stamp images with jet black archival ink.

Carefully remove the masking tape.

Shattered Glass Techniques - By Cindi Bisson

 Technique #1: UTEE Method
Stamp Artist - Cindi Bisson

Supplies Needed:

  • Cardstock of Choice
  • Stamps & Inks of Choice
  • Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel
  • Heat Tool
  • Correction Tape or Small Strips of
  • Cardstock/Paper Repositionable Adhesive

I like to sponge the background or use chalks prior to stamping to add more color. Stamp your image onto cardstock using a dark color ink. This sample was done by blending chalks with a cotton ball and then stamping the butterfly in black ink. Apply 4-5 coats of UTEE over the stamped cardstock. Place in your freezer and allow to cool approximately 15 minutes, then remove and GENTLY bend/fold the cardstock until the UTEE begins to crack. You can crack as little or as much as you wish, but be careful because if you bend it too much the UTEE will begin to break away and lift off the cardstock.

Technique #2: Correction Tape/Paper Strip Method

Stamp Artist - Cindi Bisson

Use the correction tape or small thin strips of paper and a repositionable adhesive to "grid" off your cardstock.

Stamp Artist - Kelly Snyder

You can either make a random pattern, as in the butterfly sample, or a more even pattern of squares as in the America stamp sample. I like to sponge over the surface with ink before I stamp for a more vivid effect.

The butterfly sample was sponged with a Kaleidacolor Birthstone pad. A Versamark pad was used for the background butterflies on the turquoise cardstock. The America sample was sponged with Holly Berry Red & Navy ink. Then simply stamp your image right over the strips of paper and then remove the strips. You are left with a "shattered" image.
