Clay Pins
With Mexican Designs
Contributed By Pat Huffman
- BlackBerry Creek Rubber Stamps
This project involves using clay as a base and stamping your
Mexican designs images into it and then painting, coloring, and
using powdered pigments in some cases. You can also add embellishments
such as beads or charms. I even add glitter glue for emphasis
sometimes. |

MATERIALS:
Sculpey III Black modelling compound
(other brands may be used, such as Fimo)
Mexican design stamps
Pearlescent paints or inks (I use several brands, including Dr.
Ph Martins Iridescent colors, such as copper, gold, green, lavendar.
I just love these colors and the way the inks move and dry quickly.
|
|
I also use Accent Crown
Jewels (metallics) and Folk Art acrylic paints that are pearlescent.)
Rub n Buff small paint brush a small roller or a smooth glass
jar to be used as a roller acrylic clear sealer embellishments
(beads, charms, etc.) |

1.
Work the black clay in your hands until it is soft and easy to
work with. Then roll it out or shape it into a flat piece of
clay about 1/8² thick. Take your stamp and stamp into the
clay. Trim your edges and if they look rough, you can smooth
them down with your fingers.
2.
Following the directions with the modelling compound, bake the
clay as directed. Let it cool after it is taken out of the oven.
3.
Directions for the dancer: the only thing I did after the clay
was baked was to apply a gold mettalic "rub-on" on
the high surfaces,
|
|
| leaving the black image
to remain the color of the clay. This then has to be sealed with
an acrylic spray so it will not smear. For a pin, attach a pinback.
These can also be used as part of a card or collage assemblage. |
4.
Directions for the Hands and Indian Head; After the clay was
baked and cooled, I applied different paints. The Indian Head
was painted with a small brush, leaving the black raised areas
unpainted. If you accidentally get paint on those high areas,
it is easy to wipe it off. A jewel was added as an embellishment
on the Indian Head pin. You can also use powdered pearls mixed
with gum arabic or a Dove blender to add color to your designs.
Experiment and have fun! |

Sculpey Pin using stickers
Contributed by Sandy Wisnewski
Roll out a piece of sculpey clay to about 1/4" with a rolling
pin or side of a glass. Use a favorite sticker and place on the
sculpey clay. Roll gentley over this so sticker is embedded in
clay slightly. Cut around sticker with exacto knife or a decorative
scissors. Bake according to directions on package.
I have a desginated toaster oven just for this. After it bakes
and cools, rub on clear embossing ink pad and dip in clear UTEE. Heat to melt. If you want a bumpy look, only
do one layer. If you want it to be heavier, add more layers and
heat. Around the edges, run a gold leaf pen. Attach a pinback
with E6000 glue. |
