Paper Trapunto Project

"Trapunto" is a cloth quilting technique that produces a raised surface on the quilt.  Straight line patterns are threaded/stitched with a soft yarn or cording.  The raised, rounder shapes are stuffed with small amounts of batting that are inserted from a small slit made in the back of the fabric shape you want raised.  After the shapes are stuffed, the slit is whipped stitched to close it.  A second backing fabric is then added to the quilt and normal quilting is done all around the previously "stuffed" shapes.

Trapunto is different from paper tole in that you don't use three or more layers of paper.  You only use one layer, but that layer is shaped.  It is not hard, but it does take a little time and attention to detail.  The end result is well worth it!

This project/technique can be used for several things. You may use it as a card for a very special person!
I would suggest that if you need to mail the card instead of hand deliver it, place the card inside a box to keep it from being compressed or squashed.  You can also use the project to decorate your Christmas Card basket, the center of a wreath, as part of your table decoration between two candles, a mantel ornament or...just use your imagination!

"We Three Kings"
Stamp Artist - Sandy Lemons
Powdered Pearls

Stamp your Images:

1)
Stamp your image in black waterproof ink on heavy white cardstock and set aside.

2) Stamp your image three or four times with black waterproof ink on light weight white cardstock.

TIP: When you pick a rubber stamp to use for this project, don't pick one with to many details.  A stained glass type of image is perfect.

 MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Rubber Stamp
    (Image shown from EUREKA! STAMPS)
  • Water colors or markers
  • Tiny gems or other decorations to fit your chosen stamp
  • Heavy and light white cardstock
  • Black ink
  • Pop Dots or double sided tapes and foam core or Styrofoam meat trays
  • Sheet of colored text weight paper
  • Powdered Pearls, your choice of colors
  • Ball ended burnisher or small paint brush

Color your Images:

3) Color your main image (on the heavier cardstock) using markers, watercolors or inks and Dove blender.  Since this is a holiday project, use lots of glitter and glimmer in your paintings.  Refer to the tips and techniques pages for hints and tips on how to use Powdered Pearls and Dove Blender and Powdered Pearls and watercolors.  Accent details with Pearls and gems and other glitzy trims.  Use Heat Activated Adhesive to trim edges of robes, gowns, wings, etc. with Pearls, Beedz or glitters.

4) Choose an area of your image and paint as shown in above example.  On the main image just color in like a coloring book.  Don't do any detail or embellishing as it will be covered over by the second layer.  All you need is a base coat (in case any of the image shows around the edges, you don't want a white background showing).  Save your 'fancy' coloring/painting embellishment for the TOP layer.

5) On one of the images stamped on lighter cardstock, work on the same area you just painted on the main image. Color your top layer and embellish it then let it dry thoroughly.  When the section you are working on is totally dry, cut it out carefully with an X-acto knife for detailed cutting.

Assemble your Images:

6) When your image section is cut out, hold it face down in the palm of your hand and use the burnisher or pointed end of a paintbrush to create a soft, rounded curve to give dimension to the shape.  Mostly go around the edges and "cup" the section/shape.  Use your fingers or anything that will help you give it a cup like shape.  When you are happy with the shape, place Popdots or tiny pieces of foam and double edged tape in the very center of the element.  Using tweezers, place the cup shaped section and sticky dots right down on top of it's partner on your main subject element.  You may need to slightly reshape the element.

7)
Continue on until you have most of the project in 3D form.  You don't have to do every single element in the project.
