Powdered Pearls

NOTE: Don't let the length of the directions deter you. They are long only because I went into detail on how to do each step to make it easier for beginners and to make everyone more comfortable.

1.  First we need to make a background sheet of Pearl Paper! Choose 3-5 Powdered Pearl colors. I used white pearl, silver and gold in my sample.

PEARL PAPER - instructions:
On a piece of white or colored paper, brayer with either a Versamark or a juicy clear embossing pad. Cover the whole surface of the paper in a medium-to-heavy coat of clear ink. With a soft brush (I use a #8 round watercolor brush), dip the tip of the DRY brush into one of the DRY Powdered Pearls color. Flick the color, covered brush in various places over the inked, wet cardstock. Wipe the brush on a paper towel to clean.

Load the brush again with a second color and flick this color over the paper in-between the areas where you flicked the first color. Clean your brush on a dry paper towel and load your dry brush with another color - repeat flicking.

You can use as many colors as you want, but to keep from forming a muddy color, limit your color selections to no more than five, but use at least three.

2.

You now have a sheet of cardstock with little flicks of Powdered Pearls scattered all over it. Using a large soft brush (I use an old makeup brush, like for blush or powder), sweep/brush over the Pearl covered cardstock in a circular motion (hold the Pearl covered cardstock at an angle over clean paper to catch excess). This will blend the Pearls, as well as remove any excess pearl powder . Go over the cardstock again in the same circular blending motion, to remove all the excess powder you can. Don't be afraid to really brush off the extra and then save the extra powder! It can be used again and again until it gets muddy...it can take a lot of 'abuse'.

You should now have a sheet of pearlized marbled/mottled paper that really shimmers. Seal with a spray sealer.

3.

Now, stamp the ornament image four times and emboss with a matching or complementary embossing powder on the Pearl Paper cardstock you just made. In case of mistakes, stamp an extra image if you have room.

Make your selected colors of Powdered Pearls into paints by mixing them with water and gum arabic. Complete directions are found on the Powdered Pearl Tips and Techniques page of this website.

Paint and decorate the images as you like, including beads, glitter, Beedz, etc. Just remember that the images will have to be folded in the middle and glued together. On the sample shown, I mixed Gold Powdered Pearls with Dimensional Magic into a paste-like consistency. Use a tooth pick or the tip of a brush to make 'beads' with the pearlized paste.

4.  Carefully cut out the images, leaving a thin margin of paper around the edges. Set aside.

5.  String a few beads on the head, leaving enough at the end to form a loop. Cut off any excess. String the loop on your hanging cord/thread and set aside. Leave enough cord/thread on the end to reach from the bottom of the ornament and up through the middle to leave a three inch loop on top.

6.  Be careful of your embossed areas and any other decorating you have done as you fold the images down the center and crease lightly. Coat the back of each image with either glue or double-sided tape. Match the backs of the images in order to form a three dimensional object. Leave the last 'petal' of the four folded images free. If you use glue, let the project dry. Run a bead of glue up the center of the project. Place the cord in the glue, leaving the dangle of beads to fall freely at the bottom of the project. The loop should extend out the top. With glue or tape place the fourth and final 'petal' in place. Let dry.
