"Glass Ornaments"

Blessed Are ...
Stamp Artist - Martha Myers

These ornaments come in two sizes and a variety of shapes. I like the smaller size for ornaments and the larger size to make "suncatchers".  If making a suncatcher, do not put a layer of cardstock on the back.  Seal the back with the Future Floor Finish and when it dries, it will be somewhat transparent.  Perfect for a suncatcher!

Another variation of this is to use the "Caught in Crystal" technique rather than the decorative papers.  For a complete tutorial for the ornaments using this technique Click Here.

Materials needed

  • Flat glass ornaments (available at Joann's Fabric or Michael's in the glass painting aisle)
  • Transparency sheet- cut slightly larger than your ornament (available at office supply stores)
  • Permanent black inkpad (I use Document ink, available from Stamp Zia)
  • Decorative papers (I used Enchanted Ink tissue papers for these samples)
  • fibers/string/ribbon for hanging
  • Xyron adhesive or double sided adhesive sheets (like the Wonder tape sheets)
  • optional: Future Floor Finish to seal the backing papers (available at the grocery store)
  • scrap paper for the backing
  • metallic markers
  • Stamp images used are from "The Stampsmith" (her "Blessed Are…" plate)

Directions
1. Stamp your image onto the transparency with permanent ink. Let dry.
2. Apply adhesive to the back of the transparency making sure you cover the entire area. I used my Xyron machine for this step but any double-sided clear adhesive sheet would work. Tear decorative papers and stick them onto the adhesive (Candace at Enchanted Ink calls this "Painting with Paper"). When the back is completely covered with paper, paint a thin layer of Future Floor Finish over the papers to seal them so the torn edges lay flat (this latter step is optional…I just like it better if the papers are smooth against the back). Let dry.
3. Apply adhesive to the front side of the transparency (over the stamped image). Again, I used my Xyron machine for this step. With the adhesive on, lay your glass ornament on top of the transparency so you can judge what part of the stamped image you want showing and press the ornament to the transparency. Turn the ornament over and smooth the transparency on the back to eliminate any air bubbles and to make sure it is adhered completely.
4. Trim the transparency right up against the edge of the glass.
5. You can leave the ornament as is at this point or you can finish it a little more. Because I paint the layer of Future Floor Finish onto my ornaments, they are somewhat transparent so I usually adhere a piece of scrap cardstock to the back. White cardstock on the back often makes the image stand out better in my opinion. If you use cardstock on the backside, punch a hole for your fibers in the cardstock, adhere it to the back and then trim it along the edge of the ornament.
6. Edge the ornament with a metallic marker (if desired) and attach fibers/string/ribbon for hanging.
