Stamping with
Bleach

Clorox has a new bleach "pen
" on the market (one end is the bleach end and the other
has a scrubber). It is perfect for rubber stamping, in with watercoloring/pens,
and also useful in altered book work.

In addition to stamping with bleach, I'd love to tell you about
'colouring' with bleach.
You stamp and emboss any image you like, and then give the image
some accents with bleach. Apply with q-tips or use a self-made
blenderpen with bleach... |
| Heating the bleach makes
it bleach quicker, and do experiment with different brands/thicknesses
of bleach! You can colour some of the bleached parts with gelpens
afterwards if you like. The best results you'll get with cheap
(non-coated) dark coloured papers. |

Stamping with Bleach

| One of my
favorite techniques is bleaching on dark card stock. Stamp your
image in pigment ink, Versamark or embossing ink and emboss.
(I usually use detail black or another dark color) Then using
a nylon brush because the bleach will eat your good sable or
fiber brushes, take regular household bleach and "paint"
the areas you wish to bleach out. In the enclosed sample I bleached
out the witches' faces and a surrounding area to make them stand
out. Wait for the bleach to dry or if you are impatient like
I am, use a blow dryer or a heat gun to dry the bleached area.
You will see that it will become lighter as it dries. |

Just be careful if you are using a heat gun NOT to "overcook"
your EP. Then color in the lightened areas using markers, water
colors, Pearl-Ex or whatever your favorite coloring technique
is. On the sample I used water colors and a little Pearl-Ex.
If you have dripped bleach or painted it where you didn't want
it, it is easy on black cardstock just to fill in the booboo
with a black marking pen. Other colors are not so easy to correct!
Experiment with different card stocks,
each will bleach to a different color. If you are working on
a big project, be sure that all your card stock comes from the
same source, as the "base" colors will be different
from different companies. I have had black bleach to tan, purple,
grey, brown, or reddish!
You can also stamp with bleach by putting several layers of paper
toweling in a styro meat tray and pouring on a little bleach.
Use a bold or simple stamp as this technique will not work with
a finely detailed stamp. Then tap the stamp onto the toweling
like you were inking it and stamp it on
your card stock. Be sure to rinse your stamps immediately as
bleach can disintegrate rubber. Needless to say, also be careful
to do stamping and painting with bleach in a well ventilated
area!
