The World
in My Suitcase
Stamp Artist Kate Mahoney |
Supplies:
two 11x14" sheets of parchment paper, an Altoid tin, 1/8"
satin ribbon, black masking tape, decorative paper (e.g. scrap
booking paper), assorted postage stamps from around the world,
lock & key charms, (Olive Wimple), tiny manila tags (Stamp
Diva), fibers (e.g. rayon embroidery floss), Memories black ink,
Assorted Dye & pigment inks |
| |
|
Instructions:
1. First cut decorative paper to cover the outside of the Altoid
Tin. It can be a little narrower than the front & back. Also
cut a strip to wrap around the flat side. (Don't go all the way
to the inside edge, or it will be hard to close.)
Run the pieces through the Xyron and attach them to the tin. Using
the black masking tape (about 1 cm wide), cover the edges of
the tin. I had the best luck putting the tape first
all the way around the side, and the folding the straight sides
over to the front or back, and then finally folding in the corners.
This gives it the look of an old fashioned suitcase with a leather
edge.
2. Punch holes for the handle with an awl. I made them about
3/4" apart. Thread the ribbon through the holes
to make the handle. I made it more handle-like by sewing a piece
of toothpick over the ribbon using blanket stitch and matching
embroidery floss.
3. Line the inside bottom of the box.
I used a piece of a stamped map. I got the shape by tracing around
the outside of the tin and trimming slightly inside the lines.
I attached the map piece using my Xyron, making sure to catch
the long tails of the ribbon handle under the paper.
4. Make the book. This is a combination
accordian fold and the folded book at http://www.yasutomo.com/project/foldedbook.html
(mine have only 7 sections in each part.) The accordian fold
is necessary to let the book slide nicely into the tin. The Yasutomo
book has pockets. After I folded the pieces, unfolded them and
stamped the antique maps in the background. Then I refolded them
and attached the two parts together with the Xyron.
5. I made 3 small maps using Second
Star on the Right stamps: Ireland,
Egypt, & Japan. Each of these was folded and put in a pocket
of a section of the book.
6. The accordian sections were decorated
with postage stamps (stamped & real), plus a small antique
postcard (a collage element), and a tag stamped to look like
a Passport page.
7. I stamped 6 more tags in green, two
using the Celtic tree from Wordsworth, and 2 each using Japanese
& Egyptian elements from the Second Star plate. I added postage
stamps from the appropriate companies to the tags and fibers.
Then I inserted them in the pockets as well. The final
pocket has a stamp of a house, signifying journey's end, and
a key charm.
8. To the outside, I attached more postage
stamps, as well as a lock charm. I also stamped some interesting
passport stamps on the outside.
9. Finally, I attached the book from
the accordian folded part, to the inside cover of the tin.
(The back is not attached and comes out.)

My Escape Journal
Stamp Artist - Pam Fraser |
Supplies:
- Brillance Graphite Black ink
- Brillance Coffee Bean ink
- Personal Stamp Exchange Timber dye
ink
- Ancient Page Sandalwood dye ink
- Marvy Matchables #5 Yellow dye ink
- Marvy Matchables #13 Ochre dye ink
- Encore Ultimate Metallic Gold ink
- Rub N' Buff - Gold Leaf
- Bonze and Black UTEE
- Decorative Ribbon - satin black and
black with gold stripe
- Decorative wrapping paper - leather
(outside) and faux animal hide (inside cover panels)
- Tan cardstock
- Decorative papers - papyrus, bark,
gold swirl
- Composition notebook (I got at the
dollar store - has a black edge with black and white marble look
on front - also at office supply stores)
- Scotch tape
- Double stick tape
- Glue stick
- Cardboard letter tiles
- Embossing Craft Sheet (from Suze Weinberg)
- Stipple brush
|
Steps:
1) Stamp Visions of Africa Collage
in Timber ink on tan cardstock. Tear around stamp image and stipple
with various browns, yellow, and golden inks. Use black ink along
the outside torn edges.
2) Wrap the outside notebook cardboard panels with the leather
looking wrapping paper. I used double stick tape, but you could
use glue stick or whatever you prefer. The inside of these panels
will be covered later, so don't worry about the inside edges
being neat. Note: The black edge on the left side is part of
the original notebook. By not covering this part up, I did not
have to worry about the notebook opening and closing properly
or my new covering fitting properly.
3) Cut out cardboard letter tiles and stipple on brown inks.
4) Use the Embossing Craft Sheet to melt a mixture of bronze
UTEE and black UTEE on. Impress one side of the African Cube
#2 into the hot UTEE to make a seal. Once cool, remove the stamp
and apply gold Rub N' Buff sparingly to the seal. Seal should
lift easily from the craft sheet.
5) Arrange decorative papers, stamped image, letter tiles, and
seal as a collage and attach with double stick tape and/or glue
stick to the notebook front.
6) Secure equal lengths of the black satin ribbon to the inside
of the front and back cover panels. Make sure they line up properly.
7) Attach the black and gold ribbon (to serve as a bookmark)
to the inside of the back cover panel.
8) Cover the inside front and back cover panels with decorative
paper (I used faux animal hide wrapping paper). This way where
the ribbons are attached and the rough edges from the leather
paper become hidden.
9) Stipple inks to the top right hand corner of each inside sheet
and stamp an animal or symbol image over it. I stippled and stamped
all over the first and last inside sheets to serve as cover sheets/all
the rest I only did in the corner.
10) Rub the outside edges of the journal's sheets with the brown
and gold inks. |
