A Face In The Garden
Stamp Artist - Marilyn J. Rock

Supplies: Brown cardstock, blue cardstock, white matte cardstock, decorative calligraphy paper, dye based ink pads (suggested colors: Taupe, Rose, Burnt Umber, Orange, Royal Blue, Rose), stencil brush (small), colored pencils, clear glitter glue, double-sided tape, glue stick, garden quote.

Stamp:
Beeswax (name unknown)

Instructions:
Ink entire woman stamp w/ taupe dye ink.  Apply rose ink to the entire image, over the taupe ink, with 3/8" stencil brush to blend the colors.  Stencil brush should be vigorously tapped onto dry paper towel or scrap paper to remove excess color between ink applications.

Apply burnt umber ink to the woman's hair then apply orange over that, apply blue to background, sash on dress, rose into some of the blue background to create a purple tone.  Breathe on the stamp to moisten and reactivate ink.  Stamp image onto white matte cardstock. Set aside to dry.

Touch up areas w/ colored pencils as desired. Layer calligraphy paper onto brown card front, layer blue cardstock to that and finish layering w/ the woman image on top. Glue torn garden quote to bottom left-hand corner and torn piece of calligraphy paper to top right-hand corner. Embellish top left-hand corner w/ antique button and ribbon. Apply small amount of clear glitter glue to flowers.

"Roxanne"
Stamp Artist - Betty Soverein
Directions: I call this technique "Paper Ribbons", but I'm sure that isn't the official name for it.

First I rounded up scraps of paper that all coordinate in the red, black and gold theme & cut in small strips. I then cut a sheet of the double sided adhesive film just slightly larger than I want my finished panel and remove the backing on one side. Then I begin to lay out the strips in a pattern that I find pleasing. These are at an angle on the top side and then I go to the bottom half of the panel and lay out the strips in a different pattern but being careful to keep the angle the same. I always lay the strips longer than needed. I then cut a strip of the velveteen pad to lay diagonally across the ribbons of paper. This strip is carefully adhered to the paper ribbon panel. Once this is complete, I trim the entire piece to fit the red velveteen panel with just a small frame of red showing. Remove the adhesive backing from the ribbon sheet and carefully place on the red panel. The red panel is then glued onto a black card.

On a small piece of white cardstock I stamped the lady in the cloche hat using the Graphite Black Brilliance pad. I embossed this with clear embossing powder. I colored her lips and ribbon on her hat with a red marker. Then I trimmed her down and adhered her to a slightly larger red panel and centered this panel on the ribbon card.
Viola! "Roxanne" was born.

Ophelia Star Book
Stamp Artist - Becky Sratton

The Wish
Stamp Artist - Ann Peterson

Supplies:

  • Duplex laid paper (dark/light combo) in long thin strip (1-1/4" X 17")
  • Small piece of lightweight cardboard for mini-book cover
  • Small piece of artisan paper (Italian Script)
  • Philippine fishnet paper (black, white); white mulberry paper
  • White and black glossy cardstock
  • Inks: Fresco, Ancient Page, Memories, Brilliance, Blanco, Crafter's Black, Brilliance Lightning Black, Pearl-Xpress paints (for copper wash)
  • Chartpak border tape, Fiskars wide deckle edge scissors
  • Judikins Diamond Glaze
  • Burnt umber acrylic paint (and toothbrush to apply it)
  • Eyelets, eyelet punch, tassel, thin wire, embellishments of choice
  • Premo polymer clay: black, gold, translucent, pearl white, white.
  • Baby wipes or wet washcloth
  • YES! glue or PVA

Instructions:

Mini Accordion Book.

Using a foreign text stamp, stamp the dark (back) side of the duplex paper with Blanco opaque white. Turn paper strip over and apply several colors of Fresco inks DTP as background, being sure to leave generous spaces of white or lighter colors amid any darker shades. Stamp the strip with images of choice (Second Star on the Right collage images work beautifully), masking judiciously, using Ancient Page or Memories in lighter areas to bring out the image and light-colored Brilliance in areas that are dark. (Areas that need it may be softened by applying Fresco Medici Marble over the (dry) stamped image).

Fold the stamped paper strip into accordion folds and cut cardboard cover to fit, allowing at least 1/4" over the book on all sides and in the middle for the spine. Cut paper for cover, trim and turn in corners, paste down. Punch hole and attach eyelet in top center of the *inside* of the spine. Paste down each inner panel of the inner book to the inside covers and set aside under a heavy book or small book press.

Stamped Polymer Clay Mosaic Border

(This is a great use for pieces of cured clay left over from other projects. If you want to make tiles from scratch, here's how these were made, as best I can remember:)

Condition and mix together gold, white, pearl and translucent clays to make a variegated pattern of your choice. This can be done randomly, via a Skinner blend or with multi-colored bulls-eye canes run through the pasta machine. Blend to a smooth sheet of thickness 4 (on an Atlas pasta machine) and stamp with random combinations of Crafter's Black and Brilliance. Black Premo can simply be conditioned and rolled out, then stamped with light-colored metallic Brilliance Inks. For an antiqued look, white Premo can be stamped without any ink at all, then rubbed with burnt umber after baking to bring out the impression. (Be sure to rub the acrylic paint deep into the impressions with a toothbrush, then wash off excess paint under running water). Bake Premo sheets 20 minutes at 250 degrees F. Let cool, then cut into desired tile shapes with scissors. (Warning!: if you must use Sculpey III, you'll have to cut the tiles *before* baking, as the cured clay will be far too brittle to be cut with scissors, and even then may be prone to breakage unless heavily sealed with a glaze. Only Premo, Fimo or Kato Clay will cure with the strength and flexibility best suited for this application.)

Central Image

Using an *overinked* pad of the Artprint Brown, make numerous impressions of the central image on glossy white (this is an Artchix image; but any of The Stampsmith's lovely ladies would also work well). These images need not be perfect and most can be messy, though you will ultimately need to choose one of them to be your central image. Cut a rectangle around that image, mask the image, and stamp a background of Stamp Camp's "Veined Marble" in Brilliance Lightning Black. When dry, apply a light wash of copper PearlX-Press paint to the veined background.

Mount this image on a thin border of glossy black cardstock. Cut the remainder of the messy over inked images into strips of abstract pattern and use them to make a border around the black glossy. Mount these layers onto a larger sheet of the artisan Italian Script paper. Cut a few extremely thin strips of Italian Script paper with a Fiskars wide deckle edge and go back and add them to the inner border of the central image, over the veined marble. Run Chartpak border tape around the outer edge of the over inked image border.

Now take all these layers and border the entire piece with torn strips of white mulberry paper glued to the back along the edges. Follow that with another border by gently pulling apart the black fishnet paper into strips, carefully teasing out the strings, and gluing the strips to the back of the mulberry paper. Finally, fashion a third border layer out of white fishnet, tearing these strips slightly wider so they will extend beyond the black. Be sure to tease out strings of white fishnet as well. If the strings are profuse and messy, that's good -- the more the better. The next step will bring all those unruly strings under control.

Putting It All Together

Now comes the fun "using-your-fingers" part! Use the tip of the Diamond Glaze bottle to apply it to a section of the Italian Script paper, using your finger to spread it around and remove any bubbles. Wipe the glaze off your fingers then, before the glaze dries on the paper, lift up any fishnet strings adjacent to that section and lay them in the glaze. (This adds a counterpoint of curves and texture to the inner border while "thinning out" any excess of dangling strings). Continue applying the glaze around the central image, laying some strings into it and leaving others to dangle down or along the sides until you achieve a balance you like. Because the mosaic tile border will be covering up much of these tangled strings, make sure there are a few lengths that extend out toward the main image.

Up until now I've used Yes! glue or a PVA. for mounting. However, now is the time to position and adhere the polymer clay mosaic pieces with Diamond Glaze and, again using your fingers, use the overflow to spread Diamond Glaze evenly up to the edge of the main stamped image.

Finally, place an eyelet hole where you want to place the accordion book and an eyelet for the other dangling embellishment. I used a length of bronze Artistic Wire attached to my dangling bead embellishment, pushed that through the eyelet, then bent the ends of wire flat against the back of the cardstock to keep the embellishment in place. Ditto the accordion book, though here the wire is threaded first through the eyelet, then through the tassel, then through the hole. Cut a rectangle of black glossy cardstock sized to fit and frame the piece and mount the entire construction on it -- this adds stability and hides the wires that hold the embellishments. You can adhere the outer covers of the accordion book to the cardstock below to keep it permanently open, or you can leave it to flip open or shut. (Since this piece had to "travel", I decided to paste down the covers)

The final touch is to take a dab of Diamond Glaze and adhere a bronze star above the accordion book, just above the eyelet.

After which, stand back and admire your handiwork.
Be thankful that you didn't have to write out these lengthy instructions.
Here's hoping your "Wish" has come true.
